Upcoming Lexus Cars in India
Lexus currently offers a lineup of five car models in India, comprising one sedan, three SUVs, and one MUV. The most affordable Lexus model available is the ES, with a starting price of ₹64 lakh, while the LX stands as the brand’s premium offering at ₹2.84 crore. Among the latest additions to the lineup is the NX, which comes with a price range of ₹68.02 lakh to ₹74.98 lakh.
The journey of Lexus began in 1983 when Toyota’s Chairman, Eiji Toyoda, convened a confidential meeting with top executives, posing a pivotal question: “Can we build a luxury vehicle that rivals the world’s best?” This led to the inception of the highly secretive F1 project—where “F1” signified “Flagship” and “No. 1 vehicle.” The objective was to craft a high-end automobile that would not only enhance Toyota’s portfolio but also establish a strong presence in the luxury segment.
The foundation of the F1 project was influenced by the Toyota Supra and the premium Toyota Cressida, both of which were rear-wheel drive models powered by the robust 7M-GE/7M-GTE engine. Additionally, the successful launch of Honda’s luxury brand, Acura, three years earlier encouraged Toyota to accelerate its own plans for an upscale division. Around the same period, Nissan introduced its luxury brand, Infiniti, while Mazda and Mitsubishi also contemplated entering the premium market. Ultimately, Lexus was formed as Toyota’s dedicated luxury division, redefining automotive excellence.
