Yamaha made its entry into the Indian two-wheeler market in 1985, a time when several global manufacturers were beginning to establish their presence in the country. To strengthen its foothold, Yamaha collaborated with Escorts Limited, forming a joint venture known as Escorts Yamaha Motor Limited.
Under this partnership, Yamaha introduced two legendary two-stroke motorcycles in India—the RD 350 (branded as Rajdoot 350) and the RX100. Of the two, the RX100 became an instant hit, paving the way for successors like the RXZ and RX 135.
As the demand for four-stroke motorcycles surged in the late 1990s, Yamaha adapted by introducing models like the Fazer, Crux, Libero, Enticer, and Gladiator in the 110cc-125cc segment. By August 2001, Yamaha Motor Company Limited, Japan, assumed full ownership, rebranding the company as India Yamaha Motor Private Limited.
In 2008, Yamaha made a striking comeback in the Indian performance bike segment with the launch of the YZF-R15 and FZ16 in the 150cc category. This was also the year Yamaha became the first manufacturer in India to officially import and sell superbikes, introducing the YZF-R1 and MT-01.
Over the years, Yamaha diversified its offerings, focusing on 110cc and 125cc scooters while continuing to introduce premium motorcycles through the Completely Built Unit (CBU) route.
