Upcoming MG Cars in India
MG Motor India Private Limited made its entry into the Indian automotive market in 2017 and officially commenced manufacturing and sales operations by 2019. Originally a British brand known as Morris Garages, MG is now under the ownership of SAIC Motor, a Chinese state-owned automotive giant based in Shanghai.
The company operates a single manufacturing facility in Halol, Gujarat, a plant previously owned by General Motors India. MG’s foray into the Indian market began with the launch of the Hector, a mid-size SUV that quickly gained traction among buyers due to its competitive pricing and feature-rich package. Capitalizing on the growing demand for SUVs, MG expanded its lineup with a diverse range of models.
Today, MG Motor India’s portfolio includes five SUVs, one of which is an electric vehicle. The lineup features the Astor compact SUV, the popular mid-size Hector, the three-row Hector Plus, the premium full-size MG Gloster, and the ZS EV—an electric variant of the Astor. Among these, the Astor stands as MG’s most affordable model, while the Gloster remains the brand’s flagship SUV in the country.
While MG has primarily focused on SUVs, the company has confirmed plans to introduce new body styles, including hatchbacks, MPVs, and sedans, in the near future. Known for equipping its vehicles with cutting-edge technology, MG has set a benchmark in the Indian market with feature-packed offerings. Standard highlights across its lineup include a panoramic sunroof, connected car technology, a 360-degree camera, and an electrically adjustable driver’s seat. Additionally, the Astor and Gloster come equipped with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) for enhanced safety and driving convenience.
Looking ahead, MG Motor India is gearing up to expand its portfolio with exciting new launches. The upcoming models are expected to include an MPV to rival the Kia Carnival and a sub-compact SUV to compete with the Kia Sonet and Tata Nexon. The automaker also plans to introduce a facelifted version of the ZS EV, along with a sub-4m electric car to take on the Tata Nexon EV in the growing Indian EV market.
MG Motor continues to push boundaries in innovation, offering tech-savvy, feature-loaded vehicles tailored for Indian consumers. With an expanding lineup and ambitious future plans, the brand is poised for significant growth in the country’s automotive landscape.
