Upcoming Force Cars in India
Force Motors currently offers three car models in India, comprising two SUVs and one minivan. The lineup starts with the Gurkha, priced at ₹16.75 lakh, while the Urbania stands as the most premium offering, ranging from ₹30.51 lakh to ₹37.21 lakh. Urbania is also the latest addition to the brand’s portfolio.
Founded by the visionary Late Shri N.K. Firodia, Force Motors has established itself as a leading manufacturer of versatile automobiles, including off-road and utility vehicles, three-wheelers, commercial vehicles, buses, and tractors. The company pioneered mechanized public transport in India and has introduced iconic models like the Tempo, Matador, Minidor, and Traveller.
Force Motors is now making a bold entry into mainstream passenger car manufacturing with its upcoming SUV, the Force Explorer. Developed in collaboration with Daimler, this SUV will feature a powerful 2.2L diesel engine generating 220 BHP. Built on an internally designed C-in-C chassis, the project has received an investment of ₹150 crores, with plans to manufacture 24,000 units annually.
The Evolution of Force Motors
Established in 1932, Force Motors initially imported vehicles before transitioning to domestic manufacturing. In 1950, it partnered with Vidal & Sohn from Hamburg, Germany, to produce the widely recognized “Tempo,” a three-wheeler public transport vehicle. By August 15, 1957, production gained momentum with the acquisition of a plant in Goregaon, Mumbai. Initially, the company was licensed to manufacture 80 vehicles per month and 1,000 units annually.
In 1964, production shifted entirely to Akurdi, Pune, marking a significant expansion. That same year, the company introduced the Tempo Viking, a four-wheeled truck and van, leading to an increased production capacity of 6,000 vehicles per year. By 1969, the diesel-powered Matador was launched, further solidifying the brand’s presence in the commercial vehicle segment.
During the 1970s, Force Motors’ German counterpart merged with Daimler-Benz amid widespread industry consolidations. Despite this, Force Motors continued to innovate, developing the Trax—a rugged vehicle designed for India’s rural terrains. To modernize its light commercial vehicle (LCV) lineup, the company launched the Traveller in collaboration with Daimler-Benz, setting up a dedicated manufacturing facility in Madhya Pradesh in 1987.
With a rich heritage and a forward-thinking approach, Force Motors remains a key player in India’s automobile industry, continuously pushing the boundaries of innovation and utility.
