KTM’s Origins and Evolution
KTM traces its roots back to Austria, where it was founded by Johann Hans Trunkenpolz in the town of Mattighofen. Initially established as a car repair workshop named Kraftfahrzeug Trunkenpolz Mattighofen, the company transitioned into motorcycle manufacturing after World War II. Trunkenpolz sourced engines from Fichtel & Sachs’ Rotax division and developed motorcycles in-house.
In 1953, Austrian entrepreneur Ernst Kronreif became a key stakeholder, leading to the official registration of the brand as Kronreif & Trunkenpolz Mattighofen (KTM), a name that continues to define the brand today.
Who Owns KTM?
In 1991, KTM underwent a major restructuring, splitting into four independent entities. Among them, KTM Sportmotorcycle GmbH emerged as the primary motorcycle manufacturer. The brand gained worldwide recognition, with the KTM Duke series playing a pivotal role in reviving its motorcycle division.
India’s connection with KTM began in 2007 when Bajaj Auto acquired a 14.5% stake in KTM Power Sports AG, which increased to 47.97% by 2013. By 2012, the KTM Group consolidated its operations into three entities—KTM Sportmotorcycle GmbH, KTM Werkzeugbau GmbH, and KTM Kühler GmbH (now WP Radiators)—all of which were later brought under Pierer Mobility AG.
In 2021, Bajaj exchanged its 46.5% stake in KTM AG for a 49.9% stake in Pierer Mobility, effectively increasing Pierer Mobility’s control over KTM AG from 51.7% to 98.2%.
