Triumph’s Journey in India
Originating from the United Kingdom, Triumph Motorcycles began as a fully owned subsidiary of Triumph Motorcycles Limited. However, a significant shift occurred in 2020 when Bajaj Auto partnered with Triumph to co-develop mid-capacity motorcycles ranging between 200cc and 750cc.
By early 2023, Bajaj Auto officially took over the sales and service operations of Triumph in India. Under this strategic alliance, Triumph’s operations are now managed by Bajaj Auto’s Probiking division, which focuses on high-performance motorcycles. Despite this transition, Triumph motorcycles continue to be sold through exclusive Triumph dealerships across India.
The first milestone of this partnership came in the latter half of 2023 with the introduction of the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400. These motorcycles, jointly developed by Bajaj and Triumph, are entirely manufactured in India, catering to both domestic and international markets.
How to Pronounce ‘Triumph’?
The word ‘Triumph’ is pronounced as try-umph and signifies ‘victory’ in English. The brand has a rich history dating back to 1983 when businessman John Bloor revived the defunct Triumph Engineering, establishing Triumph Motorcycles Ltd. Over the decades, Triumph has grown into a renowned name in the global motorcycling industry, with a strong presence across Europe, the Americas, and Asia.
Triumph’s Manufacturing & Operations in India
Triumph made its official entry into the Indian market in 2014 with an extensive range of motorcycles, including the Bonneville, Thruxton 900, Thunderbird, Rocket III, Daytona 675, Street Triple 675, Speed Triple 1050, Tiger 800, and Tiger Explorer 1200. Initially, these models were directly imported from Triumph’s manufacturing facility in Thailand and sold through a limited dealer network.
As Triumph expanded its portfolio, it introduced more models such as the Street Triple 765, Tiger 900, Rocket III, Trident 660, Tiger Sport 660, and the latest 900cc and 1200cc Bonneville motorcycles.
With the launch of the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X in 2023, Triumph further strengthened its commitment to the Indian market. These models became the first single-cylinder Triumph motorcycles to be entirely manufactured in India. Currently, Triumph produces these bikes at Bajaj Auto’s facility in Pune, Maharashtra. Meanwhile, the rest of the Triumph lineup continues to be imported as Completely Built Units (CBUs) from Thailand, where Triumph has one of its largest production plants.
Triumph’s expansion in India is evident, with a rapidly growing dealership network. As of now, the brand operates around 56 showrooms across 38 cities, with further expansion underway.
